If it’s English/literature related, I MIGHT give you an extra point or two….we’ll see! ;)

Here is a link to a free copy of the novel if you do not want to go buy it.  You need Adobe Acrobat to open it.  Please print it, and bring it to class!

BONUS OPPORTUNITY!!!

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

This is by far my favorite poem OF ALL TIME!!! It’s from J. R. R. Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings. Take a stab at interpreting the poem in a reply to this post, and earn yourself 5 (count ‘em, FIVE) bonus points on your lowest TEST GRADE!!!! To earn all the points, you must give a thoughtful interpretation!!! No silly, lame, or half-done explanations will work!!!  And keep in mind that you don’t have to be familiar with the story of The Lord of the Rings to offer an interpretation….poetry was meant to be personal to the reader.  Tell me what it means to you!!! :)

P.S.  You have until the end of the school day on Thursday, March 8th to post a reply!!!

Research Papers

Just a little word of warning to my seniors:

IF I catch you having someone else write your research paper for you, I will give you a zero.  IF I catch you writing someone’s research paper for him/her, I will give you a zero (even if you wrote your own).  A zero on this research paper can fail you for the semester, and for some of you, this would mean failing my class entirely and not graduating.  Kids talk, and I’ve already heard about some of the “deals” being made over research papers.  I can’t promise I will catch you if you cheat, but I can promise that if I do catch you, your grade in my class will reflect the fact that you are a cheater.

I CANNOT believe half the year  is gone already!!!

Seniors:  Gear up for research papers!  As soon as we are done with Frankenstein, we will be starting!!!  You must do one to pass….it is crucial!   I’ll walk you through it, so you shouldn’t have any trouble!!!  Don’t dread it.  I’ll try to ease you into it, and you need to know how to do it for college, anyway!!!

9th graders:  Now is the time to make up for what you did NOT do last semester!  Work hard, improve those grades, learn something, and make me happy!!!

Happy 2nd Semester!!!! It’ll go by fast, and the sweet summertime will be here before you know it!!!

END OF THE FIRST NINE WEEKS!!!!

Posted by Mrs. Smitherman | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 11-10-2011

Kiddos,

If you are missing ANY assignment/test for me, you must make it up THIS WEEK, or you will have a zero for each grade you are missing!!!  This will seriously kill some of your grades, so DO NOT let this week go by without doing the work you should have already done. You are responsible for your own grade…not me, not momma, not daddy, not Mr. Ellis…ONLY YOU!!!  Take responsibility for yourself!!!
